Christopher was a surprise and a blessing for Evelyn. But her pregnancy took a toll on her health and she ended up in a wheelchair. When her rent tripled, she moved into a shelter with her newborn son where they would live for the next three years.
Then, in January 2016, Evelyn and Christopher moved into their first home ever at CUCS’s Lenniger Residence, one of the first supportive housing programs for families in New York City.
“Having a home means that when he is tired he can say ‘I want to go to my home, I want to go to bed.’ When we were in the shelter we didn’t call it home, it didn’t feel like home. It gives a sense of security. It feels great. CUCS feels like home.”
Christopher is in kindergarten now and is excited about the Lenniger’s annual holiday celebrations. The Lenniger is home and a place where Evelyn and Christopher can receive the care, support, and services they need to flourish.
When you support CUCS, you help build a community of care and encouragement to thrive. You help build brighter futures.
